    CARBON FOOTPRINT

The Carbon Footprint is a measurement tool. It allows us to quantify greenhouse gas emissions associated with a product or an organization, according to defined boundaries, criteria, and methodologies. The result, which can be in kilograms or tons, is expressed in CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e) and concerns a specific impact category: climate change.

But what is the practical use of a measurement like this?

First of all, to know where we stand.

Knowing that a product has a Carbon Footprint of X kg of CO₂e, or that a company’s activities generated X tons of CO₂e in a given year, gives us something concrete to work on.

It allows us to understand where the emissions come from, where they are concentrated, and where we can take action: in materials, in the various production phases, in transport, or, in the case of our organization, in the different Scopes.

Over the years, however, we realized there was another important step for us to take as a brand: making these numbers understandable to others as well.

This is why we have developed various tools and content around the Carbon Footprint: for example, to explain to retailers how we measure it, to consumers how to interpret the results, and to colleagues what we have learned along the way.

    PRODUCT CARBON FOOTPRINT

A Product Carbon Footprint (CFP) measures the greenhouse gas emissions associated with a product throughout its considered life cycle.

At AKU, we have been calculating the carbon footprint of our products since 2021 in accordance with ISO 14067:2018. Our CFP approach is also certified annually by an independent third-party body, Bureau Veritas.

To help with reading and understanding it, we have developed two different tools, designed to make the CFP not only more accessible but also a tool for making informed choices at the time of purchase:

    IMPACTO
Impacto is the tool we developed to explain what a product's carbon footprint is, what the result consists of, and which elements contribute to the final value. It is a technical document, useful as a benchmark for retailers.

YOU’VE JUST ENCOUNTERED A CARBON FOOTPRINT. DON’T PANIC.
We created this guide primarily to help consumers navigate when they encounter a CFP: five simple rules to understand how to read it and what that number can—and cannot—tell us. Now that this environmental information is increasingly found on hangtags, digital passports, and online channels, it is essential not only to communicate the data but also to provide the tools to understand it correctly.

    ORGANIZATIONAL CARBON FOOTPRINT

The Organizational Carbon Footprint (CFO)instead looks at the company as a whole and quantifies the greenhouse gas emissions associated with its activities in a given calendar year.

At AKU, we calculated our CFO for the first time in 2022and calculated it again in 2025. The calculation follows the ISO 14064-1standard and is certified, once again, by an independent third-party body, Bureau Veritas.

The CFO considers emissions according to the three Scopes of the GHG Protocol — Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3— allowing us to understand which activities and categories contribute most to AKU's overall emissions.

Measuring it over time allows us to monitor progress and identify where to focus reduction actions, in line with our decarbonization path and the objectives defined and validated through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

In this case as well, we have chosen to supplement the result expressed in tons of CO2e with dedicated content to explain what it means to calculate a CFO and how we use this tool in our journey toward responsibility:

    OUR ORGANIZATIONAL CARBON FOOTPRINT
A technical-scientific insight to explain what a CFO is, what it includes, and how it is calculated.

    OUR DECARBONIZATION PLAN
Measuring company emissions is only the starting point. In this article, we describe how we use the data resulting from the CFO to define and monitor our decarbonization path, in line with our SBTi objective.

    BEYOND THE NUMBER

There is a reason why we have built so much around the Carbon Footprint over the years. We do not want the measurement to be reduced to a simple number.

Measuring our impact means, first and foremost, knowing it and having a starting point to understand where to intervene, but it also means making this information understandable and accessible to those who encounter it.

We believe, in fact, that a brand's responsibility is not just measuring and communicating its data, but also helping people interpret it. Not everyone is an expert in Life Cycle Assessment, and it shouldn't be necessary to be one in order to understand the meaning of an environmental figure.

Because a number, without the context that accompanies it, remains just a number. When it is instead explained and understood, it can become a useful tool: to better understand a product, to ask and be asked questions, to evaluate the available information, and, when possible, to make more informed purchasing choices.

This is, for us, the value of all the work surrounding the Carbon Footprint: transforming a technical measurement into information that can truly be used.

Measuring is important. Making what we measure understandable, for us, is equally so.
