VDBS
Mountain Guides
The German Association of Mountain and Ski Guides (VDBS) has represented the interests of professional mountain guides since its foundation in 1969.
Today, it stands for the highest standards of professionalism, safety, and excellence in German mountaineering. The association brings together around 800 IFMGA/UIAGM-certified Mountain and Ski Guides, approximately 75 VDBS-certified Climbing Instructors, and around 350 UIMLA-qualified International Mountain Leaders. Together with around 75 Mountain Guides from the German Armed Forces and Police and 100 Rope Access Technicians, the VDBS represents a community of approximately 1,300 members.
Its expertise ranges from versatile all-round professionals working across every type of alpine terrain to highly specialised experts in rock climbing, ice climbing, and expedition guiding.
The VDBS – Evolving with the Mountains
Mountain sports are changing rapidly. Climate change, overtourism, and the growing popularity of indoor climbing are reshaping both the environment and the demands placed on professional guides. The VDBS responds to these developments with modern education and continuous professional training, ensuring that its members can continue to provide safe, responsible, and unforgettable mountain experiences. As Germany's leading competence partner for alpine safety, the VDBS represents the interests of its members at both national and international level.
Its core activities include:
- Education & Professional Development: Delivering the highest standards of training and continuing education.
- Innovation: Advancing alpine techniques, equipment, and technologies in close cooperation with industry partners.
- Responsibility: Promoting alpine safety while actively supporting the protection and sustainable stewardship of mountain environments.
