Our Digital Product Passport: a new way to understand the product

At AKU, we have been working for years to measure and reduce the impact of our materials and production processes, including by quantifying emissions in kg CO₂e. Making this information accessible means giving people clearer tools to guide their choices with greater awareness.

This journey also sits within an evolving European regulatory framework. The ESPR, Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, introduces the Digital Product Passport as one of the tools designed to support transparency, traceability and circularity throughout the product life cycle.

The specific requirements of the Digital Product Passport have not yet been defined in detail for each product category. In the meantime, AKU has chosen to anticipate this direction by developing Our Digital Product Passport: a project inspired by the principles of transparency and accessibility behind the Digital Product Passport, applied to a selection of models.

In 2025, the first projects were developed for Aira V-Light and Bellamont IV, with the aim of making technical, environmental and product information available in a simple, clear and easily accessible way.

The system is accessible in store through a QR code placed on an FSC-certified paper hangtag, attached directly to the footwear without the use of unnecessary plastic. By scanning the code, users can access a dedicated landing page for the specific model.

On the page, the footwear is presented through interactive content, images and videos, together with information on materials, certifications, countries of origin, chemical compliance, packaging, maintenance, product care and Carbon Footprint.

Specific data is also provided for each component of the shoe, including composition, country of origin, weight in grams, any certifications and the related reference codes. The same approach is also extended to the packaging, offering a more complete view of the model and its characteristics.

The aim is to make environmental product information increasingly accessible, transparent and easy for end consumers to understand. This allows them to take these aspects into account when making purchasing decisions, supporting more conscious and informed choices about what they choose to wear.

The project is designed to evolve over time and to be progressively extended to other models, further expanding AKU’s path towards increasingly transparent, clear and accessible product communication.
